Scrub fire near John Burke Drive, Porirua. – Arama Wihapi
A scrub fire destroyed part of the hills near Adrenalin Forest in Porirua on Friday and threatened homes.
The fire service was called at 3.20pm to John Burke Dr, where the hillside below the street was well alight.
Five fire engines worked to dampen the flames and the fire was out by 4.30pm.
One eyewitness said at the fire’s height, about 3.30pm, the flames were metres high and for a time threatened nearby homes.
The hillside was scorched to 15 metres below houses in places.
